Our goal is to help save lives by providing boating education and support to the public as well as assisting the police when required.

Unit facts
The Manukau Coastguard was formed in 1969 as a founding member of the Royal New Zealand Coastguard Federation.

The Manukau Coastguard is tasked to the average of 90 incidents per year and assists well over 300 persons per year.



As well as serving a search and rescue function Manukau Coastguard also takes preventative action by advising boaties of any weather warnings, providing up-to-date condition reports for the Manukau Bar and notification of any navigational hazards in the Harbour.


We also provide a 24-hour service on VHF frequencies to log trip reports, issue weather forecasts and provide tidal information.

We monitor VHF channels 63, 68 and 16 as well as SSB frequency 2182KHZ twenty-four hours a day for distress calls.

Operational Facts
The Manukau Coastguard operates on the Manukau Harbour, Manukau Bar, and entire West Coast from Port Waikato in the south to the Kaipara Harbour in the north

Our operational radius out from the Manukau Heads is approximately 40 nautical miles.

Our "standard " patrol area includes Onehunga to Whatipu, the Papakura Channel and the Harbour surrounding the Auckland International Airport.

The unit maintains a presence at all major events on the Harbour to provide assistance if required.
