Our Unit operates Rescue One, an 8.0 Metre Naiad DRV or dedicated
Rescue Vessel. This vessel is powered by two 175hp Yamaha Outboards and
can reach speeds in excess of 45 knots in an emergency.
During a call out the boat is crewed by:
A Skipper - Responsible for the overall safety of the vessel and may also be required to be the scene commander at the site of an emergency.
A Navigator Uses the electronic chart equipment and GPS to ensure the boat is heading in the right direction and also operates the radios.
Medic While all crewmembers have basic medical training the medic ensures any victims are stable for their trip back to dry land.
An experienced Seaman This crewmember is experienced with all aspects of small boats from knot tying to towing and is able to help in any situation.
All crewmembers are also cross-trained in case they need to step in and help at anytime. If needed, two extra crewmen can be carried to help out with any difficult incident.
When launched to an incident the vessel carries equipment to deal with most medical and shipboard emergencies. Rescue One is also fully equipped with the latest GPS and Radar systems, radios and extra safety equipment such as life jackets and emergency rations.
If required, heavy pumps from the Titirangi Volunteer Fire Brigade are secured into the boat. These pumps have been used on a number of occasions to pump out larger boats.
